From October 15 to December 11, 2011, the 1-500 seater Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila draws its curtain open to bring back the timeless Broadway hit and winner of the 1959 Tony Award for Best Musical, The Sound of Music.
The musical which was written by Oscar Hammerstein II and set to music by Richard Rodgers, based on the book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, is directed by Roxanne Lapus.
London's West End actress, Joanna Ampil lead the role of Maria. Playing as her alternate is Cris Villonco. Stage veterans Audie Gemora and Ed Feist will alternately act as The Captain. Also starring in the show are Pinky Marquez and Sheila Francisco as the Mother Abbess; Pinky Amador as the Baroness; Miguel Faustman and Robbie Guevara as Max; Tanya Manalang and Rachel Coates as Liesl; and Marvin Ong and Bryan Homecillo as Rolf.
The Sound of Music showcases the story of Maria Rainer, a young postulant appointed as governess over the seven children of widower Captain Georg von Trapp. Maria takes on the role of a mother to her charges, teaches them the art of music and singing, and captivates the heart of the once cold and stern captain.
